It’s confirmed: Portugal will continue to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in 2025. The event will be held in Switzerland, either in Basel or Geneva – the host city will be announced on August 30.

In a statement, the public broadcaster RTP noted that “the decision underscores our commitment to promoting culture and music on the international stage”, with further details to be announced “very soon”.

Festival da Canção remains the selection method, and submissions are open until October 15. As in this year, there will be 20 songs in 2025: 14 from authors invited by RTP and six from authors selected through open submission.

All songs must be original and unpublished, with a maximum duration of three minutes. For the open submission, any Portuguese citizen (including those living abroad) as well as individuals of other nationalities residing in Portugal can participate. Songs are to be submitted via this link.

The format of Festival da Canção remains unchanged: two semi-finals with ten songs each, with six advancing: five chosen through a 50/50 combination of jury and public votes, and a sixth selected solely by the public in a second round of voting. In the final, the results will be determined 50/50 by the regional jury (five regions of mainland Portugal + Azores + Madeira) and the public.
